Pears are picked mature, but not ripe.  They do not ripen well on the tree.  When you purchase your pears, you will need to allow them to ripen before eating.  Bartlett pears will turn yellow when ready.  Bosc and d'Anjou will need to be checked by gently pressing at the base of the stem.  If they give slightly, they are ripe and ready to be eaten.

You can help your pears to ripen by placing them in a brown paper bag and leaving them sit at room temperature.
