This growing season marks what we hope will be a watershed moment for Bohlayer’s Orchards. After generations of growing our fruit using conventional chemical pesticides, we will begin introducing more natural methods and organic pesticides into our farm. This decision was made out of health concerns for those of us working in the orchard and for all of us consuming the fruits of those labors. As a first step in this new direction, we have planted a small plot of young trees that will be cared for using only organic methods. Our existing orchards will have some organic controls introduced this summer as we work to wean them off of chemical pesticides.
Organic orchards have the most success when done on a small scale. As a result, we will continue to decrease the number of older trees in the orchard. In turn, this will begin to decrease the amount of fruit available.
A Membership Form is available by clicking the link on the side of this page. Membership forms are also available at the farm. Enclosed you will find detailed information regarding this program. Please note Pick Your Own apples and pears will only be available to those families purchasing a membership. This is being done to confirm that fruit is available for those wishing to have the experience of picking their own more naturally grown apples and pears. Please know we will continue to have our store open seven days a week during the harvest season so that everyone will have the chance to purchase harvested fruit from our family and benefit from these new growing methods.
Thank you for your continued support of our family’s farm. With your help we will foster more sustainable farming methods and begin Growing a Healthy Tradition!
Best Wishes,
David & Heather Loomis
